Queens, Lighthouse Journeys and Fruit Faces in Year 1!
A creative and engaging start to the term filled with history, science, maths and imaginative art.
TL;DR:
- Compared Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria in History.
- Started a new Science topic on identifying animals.
- Explored the meaning of belonging in RE.
- Wrote imaginative journey stories inspired by The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch.
- Created colourful portraits inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
Year One have had a fantastic and very busy start to the term, throwing themselves into a wide range of exciting learning experiences across the curriculum.
We are so proud of the enthusiasm, teamwork and effort they have shown so far.
In History, the children have begun an engaging topic comparing Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria. They worked collaboratively to create an impressive timeline, using images of monarchs alongside pictures from their reigns. The children showed great understanding as they discussed what belonged to the past, more recent times, and the present day.
We have also launched our Science topic on Animals, starting by identifying and naming a wide range of animals based on their appearance. The children have been developing their observational skills and using new scientific vocabulary to describe what they notice.
In RE, our new topic is all about Belonging. The children have been thinking thoughtfully about what it means to belong to a group, discussing families, friendships, teams and communities, and how belonging helps us feel safe, happy and valued.
In English, the class have produced some fantastic work inspired by the story The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. They have planned, written and shared their own imaginative ‘journey’ stories. It has been lovely to see their confidence and creativity growing with each piece of writing.
In Maths, we have begun our unit on Addition and Subtraction, with a focus on exploring pairs of numbers that make 10. The children have been using practical resources and visual representations to deepen their understanding, gaining confidence in recalling number bonds.
Our Art lessons have been full of colour and creativity. The children have been learning about the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo. Inspired by his work, the children created their own imaginative portraits.
We are incredibly proud of how Year One have settled into their learning this term and can’t wait to see what they achieve next.
