Zoo Trips, Minibeasts and Maths Magic in Year 2!
A busy half term of storytelling, science, creativity and teamwork for our enthusiastic Year 2 class.
TL;DR:
- Wrote “rag to riches” stories linked to emotions and Easter.
- Explored multiplication, doubling and times table patterns.
- Learned what animals and humans need to survive.
- Visited Marwell Zoo to observe animals and habitats.
- Created moving minibeast pictures using DT mechanisms.
In the last half term, the children have been incredibly busy across the curriculum, showing curiosity, resilience and enthusiasm in everything they do.
In English, pupils explored rag to riches tales, writing stories that developed from difficult beginnings to happy endings. They linked this beautifully to PSHE and RE, reflecting on feelings of sadness and happiness. Through stories such as Badger’s Parting Gifts and the Easter story, children discussed how emotions change over time, why both sad and happy moments matter, and how Christians remember these feelings at Easter.
Pupils discussed their own experiences and thought about how others might feel.
In Maths, the children deepened their understanding of multiplication. They represented multiplication in different ways and explored the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, spotting patterns and explaining relationships between multiples. Pupils learned how doubling and halving link to multiplication and became confident explaining how factors affect the product, even when multiplying by one or zero.
Our science learning focused on what animals, including humans, need to survive. The children explored food, water, air, exercise and habitats, linking this to healthy eating and physical wellbeing. A highlight was our trip to Marwell Zoo, where pupils brought their learning to life by observing animals in real environments.
In DT, children designed and created minibeast themed moving pictures, using sliders, levers, pivots and wheels. They proudly evaluated their work and suggested improvements.
Across Music, Geography and PE, the children performed rhythm chants, learned about our local area, and developed teamwork, coordination and perseverance. It has been a joy to see their confidence and independence grow across so many exciting areas of learning.
