Meerkat Mail, Woodland Wonders and Gunpowder Plots in Year 2!

Mr Crombleholme • October 9, 2026

A busy half term of storytelling, nature discoveries, historical mysteries, creative artwork and mathematical challenges for our enthusiastic Year 2 class.

TL;DR:

  • Wrote imaginative journey tales inspired by Meerkat Mail, using descriptive language and punctuation.
  • Developed number skills to 100, including adding and subtracting multiples of ten.
  • Visited Fort Victoria Country Park to explore woodland and seaside habitats.
  • Investigated Guy Fawkes, the Gunpowder Plot and the history of Bonfire Night.
  • Explored Harvest traditions, created self-portraits and developed musical and practical life skills.

Year 2 have had a busy and exciting half term filled with learning, creativity and exploration.

In English, they enjoyed reading Meerkat Mail and used the story to inspire their own journey tales. The children created characters who travelled to different habitats and wrote about the places they visited before discovering that home was a special place to be. They worked hard to include descriptive language and accurate punctuation.

In maths, the children have been strengthening their understanding of numbers to 100. The children have been counting forwards and backwards, exploring tens and one and representing multiples of ten. They have also learned how to add and subtract multiples of ten, representing the calculation in various ways and solving problems involving addition and subtraction of multiples of ten.

Our science learning has focused on living things and their habitats. To bring our learning to life, we visited Fort Victoria Country Park where we met the park ranger and explored different habitats. The children investigated the woodland; looking for creatures and plants and also explored seaside environments. In class, they have been learning about the habitats of various animals. They have also learnt about living, dead and never-been-alive things. The children showed great curiosity and enthusiasm as they asked questions and made observations about the natural world.

In History, the children have learnt about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. The children have sequenced key events, explored historical sources, and discussed which sources we could trust when learning about the past. The children enjoyed learning why Bonfire Night is celebrated today.

In RE, they have explored how bread is used as a symbol at Harvest. The children learned that Christians use a harvest loaf as a symbol of God's love, care and provision. They thought carefully about what symbols meant and designed their own symbolic bread creations.

In Art, the children developed their drawing skills and created self-portraits inspired by a range of artists. The children experimented with different grades of pencils and carefully observed their own features before producing detailed portrait artwork.

In Music, they learned melodies, explored rhythm and beat, and began composing simple call-and-response pieces.

In PSHE, the children thought about keeping ourselves safe and practised tying shoelaces.

The children have worked incredibly hard this half term and have shown love, courage and friendship across all areas of the curriculum. We are very proud of everything they have achieved and look forward to another exciting term of learning ahead.
