Nature Bracelets, Rugby Moves and Hot Chocolate in Year 4!

Mrs Bushell • September 25, 2026

A fantastic start to Year 4 filled with outdoor discoveries, reading adventures, rugby skills and mathematical challenges.

TL;DR:

  • Explored Forest School, making nature bracelets, leaf rubbings and planting seeds.
  • Enjoyed hot chocolate prepared outdoors using a Kelly Kettle.
  • Embraced daily Reading for Pleasure sessions, sharing books and recommendations.
  • Developed attacking, defending and teamwork skills in rugby.
  • Explored place value by creating numbers over 1,000 using practical maths resources.

Ellen MacArthur Class have made a brilliant start to life in Year 4! Although we were all together in Year 3, there have already been lots of exciting differences and new opportunities to enjoy.

One of the highlights of this half term has been Forest School, and we have loved being outdoors and learning in nature. This week, we made colourful nature bracelets, created leaf rubbings, planted seeds that we discovered and even enjoyed a delicious hot chocolate made using a ‘Kelly Kettle’. It was wonderful to explore, investigate and appreciate the natural world around us.

Another exciting addition to our timetable is our daily Reading for Pleasure session. For the last half an hour of each day, we can choose what we read, who we read with and where we read! The classroom is buzzing with book recommendations, thoughtful discussions and enthusiastic readers sharing their favourite moments from stories. It has been lovely to see everyone developing a genuine love of reading.

In PE, we are building our confidence and skills in rugby. This week, we focussed on the positioning of attacking and defending players, thinking carefully about teamwork, strategy and communication. The children showed great enthusiasm and determination as they practised these new skills.

Meanwhile, in Maths, we have started a new unit on Place Value, and played a game with a partner creating numbers over 1,000 with our manipulatives.

It has been a wonderful week in Year 4 and we cannot wait to see what the rest of the term brings!
